Use the four-part Clearwater check
A statewide headline is context; it is not a same-hour test of this beach.
- LocationFind the closest FWC sampling point to Clearwater Beach, not merely a result somewhere in Pinellas County.
- DateFWC’s daily map covers recent samples. An older dot says less about today.
- ConcentrationRead the category attached to the sample; do not infer concentration from water color or smell.
- EffectsWhen a bloom is present, check the available respiratory forecast and follow FWC/health guidance.
What the FWC categories mean
These categories describe one laboratory sample. They are not a sitewide guarantee.
| FWC result | Cells per liter | Practical interpretation from FWC |
|---|---|---|
| Not present / background | 1,000 or less | No effects anticipated from that sample. |
| Very low | More than 1,000–10,000 | Respiratory irritation is possible. |
| Low | More than 10,000–100,000 | Respiratory irritation is expected; fish kills are possible. |
| Medium | More than 100,000–1,000,000 | Respiratory irritation and probable fish kills. |
| High | More than 1,000,000 | The same impacts, with water discoloration also possible. |
Red tide is separate from other water decisions
A low or missing red-tide result does not answer rip-current, lightning, or bacterial-advisory questions.
Swimming and symptoms
FWC advises against swimming in or around red tide because it can irritate skin and eyes. Sensitive visitors may experience stronger respiratory effects.
Pets
Keep pets away from dead fish and foam. Use current FWC guidance if a pet enters affected water.
Missing sample
Say “no recent nearby sample found,” never “no red tide.” Check the official map and on-site conditions.
