Month-by-month decision table
Air and rain use official 1991–2020 St. Petersburg–Clearwater normals. Water uses the 2016–2025 NOAA Pier 60 analysis. A normal is not a trip forecast.
| Month | Normal high / low | Normal rain | Mean Gulf temp. | Plan around this |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan. | 70.5 / 52.5°F | 2.62 in | 63.4°F | Mild walking days, cool mornings and water. |
| Feb. | 73.2 / 55.1°F | 2.38 in | 66.3°F | Good touring; water depends on the week. |
| Mar. | 76.5 / 59.2°F | 2.43 in | 71.9°F | Check air and water rather than assuming spring warmth. |
| Apr. | 81.5 / 64.2°F | 2.57 in | 76.7°F | Strong air/rain/water balance. |
| May | 86.2 / 69.8°F | 2.73 in | 82.4°F | Warm water; late month trends stormier. |
| Jun. | 90.0 / 74.6°F | 8.86 in | 87.2°F | Hot wet-season planning; favor early outdoor time. |
| Jul. | 90.5 / 75.9°F | 9.73 in | 88.9°F | Highest normal rain and warmest water in these tables. |
| Aug. | 90.6 / 76.3°F | 8.83 in | 88.5°F | Heat, storms, and tropical weather need flexibility. |
| Sep. | 88.8 / 75.2°F | 6.40 in | 86.0°F | Warm water; wet/tropical checks continue. |
| Oct. | 84.4 / 69.7°F | 2.49 in | 80.1°F | Normal rain falls, but tropical/red-tide checks still matter. |
| Nov. | 77.7 / 60.9°F | 1.64 in | 72.6°F | Lowest normal rainfall; cooler Gulf water. |
| Dec. | 72.4 / 56.0°F | 2.94 in | 67.3°F | Mild afternoons, cooler mornings, possible fronts. |
Seasonal realities that change the plan
Use patterns for booking and packing; use official forecasts for the day itself.
Rainy season
NWS Tampa Bay describes the normal rainy season for most of West Central Florida as roughly May 25 through October 10. Storm timing varies with the daily wind pattern.
Hurricane season
The official Atlantic season runs June 1 through November 30. Monitor the National Hurricane Center and understand cancellation terms; a seasonal outlook is not a trip forecast.
Red tide
FWC describes a seasonal tendency, not a safe calendar. No month should be marketed as red-tide free.
Lightning
If thunder is audible, move to a substantial building or enclosed hard-topped vehicle and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.
Fast month chooser
Choose the version of comfort you value rather than a generic “best time.”
Compare April, May, and October, then account for late-May storm patterns and October tropical-season uncertainty.
June through September have historical monthly means of 86°F or higher in the station analysis.
December through February have normal highs around 70–73°F, with cooler mornings and water.
